Food For Thought!! Life Is The Coffee

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. The conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and in life.

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said:

"If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.

"What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups and were eyeing each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee and the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and do not change the quality of Life.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided. So, don't let the cups drive you ...enjoy the coffee instead."

Have A great week ahead!!!

Who's Hotter: Wizkid Girlfriend vs. Davido's [Photos}

They are both young and superb, we all love them . .and they are definitely doing well in the Nigerian Music Industry. They have both being compared in almost everything, from fan clout to financial success to musical talents, and both have proven their worth in these areas over and over again.

Apparently, whil going through comments from different websites and blogs to see who is winning/or has won, I noticed that both artistes’ girlfriends haven’t been compared!

I guess the reason is because, unlike Wizkid (who has a girlfriend and flaunts his relationship) lots of fans don’t know Davido also has a girlfriend too! And yes, she is a looker! Her name is Nish Kards.

EXCLUSIVE: Don’t Call Me Commander-In-Chief Of The Armed Forces, Jonathan Tells Nigerians

In what is a clear departure from the norm, the presidency has ordered all government functionaries to desist from addressing President Goodluck Jonathan as the “Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria” at non-military functions.

The directive is contained in a strongly worded October 14 circular, No SGF/OP/1/S.3/X/664, by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim.

The memo, obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, Thursday, was addressed to the Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, ministers, heads of ministries, departments, agencies and parastatals, the leadership of the National Assembly, and government-owned companies.

“It is further directed that except in purely armed forces programmes, Mr. President should not be addressed as the “Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement warned.

“The approved designation of the President for the purposes of all official correspondence, public announcements or Communication should be “The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I am to stress that for all official purposes, Mr. President should be addressed as follows: ‘His Excellency, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Mr. Anyim added, urging strict compliance to the presidential directive by all Nigerians.

This new directive contradicts the norm among public office holders in Nigeria who like their titles, official and otherwise, emphasized at public events. It however, does not remove the fact that the president, by virtue of the constitution, is the commander of the Nigerian armed forces.

Section 130 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) states: “There shall be for the Federation a President. The President shall be the Head of State, the Chief Executive of the Federation and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federation.”

Also, Section 218(1) of the constitution spells out the powers of the President as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federation to include the power to determine the operational use of the armed forces of the Federation.

The memo did not state the reason for Mr. Jonathan’s decision. But former Nigerian leaders, both military and civilian, have always been called by that title both in military and non-military programmes.

Only official portrait

The directive also warned against the use of Mr. Jonathan’s unofficial pictures at programmes of events, invitation cards, or publications by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, as well as other government organizations.

The circular directed that, henceforth, only the official portrait of the President should be printed in official documents or displayed in offices across the country.

USE OF OFFICIAL PORTRAIT AND APPROPRIATE DESIGNATION OF THE PRESIDENT, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

It has come to the attention of Mr. President that several Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as other Organisations often use his unofficial pictures in programmes of events, invitation cards or publications. Mr. President has, therefore, directed that, henceforth only his official portrait should be printed in official documents or displayed in offices.

2. It is further directed that except in purely armed forces programmes, Mr. President should not be addressed as the “Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” The approved designation of the President for the purposes of all official correspondence, public announcements or

ASUU To Meet Over Strike, Says Not Under Pressure To Call Off Strike

The National Strike Coordinating Committee, NSCC, comprising of principal officers and Zonal Coordinators of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU will be meeting Saturday to take stock of the ongoing strike embarked by the union that is entering the fourth months.

Meantime, ASUU said that it was not under any pressure to call-off the strike despite what it called sponsored protests and rallies against the union, stressing that before the union decided to embark on the strike, it holistically took objective assessment of the situation.

One of the branch Chairmen of ASUU and member of NSCC who spoke exclusively to Saturday Vanguard on the condition of anonymity said that the meeting will take place in Ondo state and that there would be a situation report including the meeting representatives of ASUU had with the Federal government last week’s Friday.

He said,”We are meeting tomorrow, National Strike Coordinating Committee. Tomorrow is arrival. Our Principal officers and Zonal Coordinators met with government last week Friday, one week today, so we want to discuss the outcome of the meeting, after that we will now meet.”

Commenting on the plethora of protests by different groups over the strike which could be mounting pressure on the union to call off the strike, he said that “There is no pressure on us. We look at things objectively and remember that even me as I am talking we cannot suspend the strike.

“We have to get inputs from the branches that is why our strike is always very tight, because before we declared the strike, we have collected inputs from all branch officers in the universities in Nigeria, we collated it, discussed it extensively for two days before we declared the strike.

“And if there is any offer made by government, we have to look at it, that is the principal officers ten of them in number, the zonal coordinators who take over functions of NEC during the strike, so, they will look at what government has offered, brief us the branch chair persons then it is at this point we will now know whether to convene an emergency NEC to look at it holistically.

“By the time they are briefing us, they will also ask us to brief our committee members and take the issue to the congress, it is not a one man show, all these ones they are talking about politics it is not true, the process right from the least of all the lecturers to the highest that is the professor from each branch, we collate all their responses, it is only when they advice us to suspend that we suspend, it is not just one man show.”

He explained that during strike situation, the National Strike Coordinating Committee comprising of principal officers and zonal coordinators always take over the functions of NEC, adding, “every single week, the zonal coordinators will take the information to the various branches who will now take the information to congress, collating information from congress, the branch chairman will take it back to the zonal coordinator, the zonal coordinator takes it back to NSCC, the reason is that NEC has the larger component, we are many.”

He said that the reason behind allowing the smaller number of officers to meet during strike situation was to cut cost.

“Why NEC cannot meet during the strike is because of cost, we are more in number. In NEC we have over 100 people, but NSCC will be between 10 and 20, so it is manageable, we have a channel of communication.”

All attempts made to call the National President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge failed as he neither picked calls put across his GSM line nor replied the text message sent to him.

19-Yr-Old Teenager Jailed For Selling Cassava-Stuffed Nokia Phone

A 19-year- old street trader, Emeka Chukwumuata, was on Friday sentenced to two months imprisonment by the Special Offences Court, Alausa, Ikeja, for selling a cassava-stuffed Nokia phone.

“I am usually lenient to young people but you have to go in for inflicting pain on people,’’ the Magistrate, Mrs O. Kushanu said.

“It is unfortunate that it is the young people who are being brought to the court, the manufacturer should be raided and brought to court,’’ she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused was sentenced after he had pleaded guilty to the charge.

Chukwumuata, who resides in Ikeja area of Lagos, faced a charge of street trading.

The prosecutor, Mr Babatunde Sunmonu, said that the accused committed the offence at about 11:00 a.m. on Medical Road, Ikeja.

Sunmonu said that the offence committed contravened Section 10(1)(a) of the Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003.

ONITSHA MARKET ON FIRE: Traders Attempt Suicide, Jump Into Raging Inferno

Onitsha traders and small scale industrialists lost goods and properties worth millions of naira yesterday in Onitsha following an early morning fire that gutted the polythene dealers market, Nwaizu Estate, Awada.

Three businessmen, who could not withstand the enormity of their losses allegedly attempted suicide by jumping into the raging fire but they were later rescued by fellow traders.

Traders watched helplessly as nothing was recovered from the inferno.

Scores of distraught shop owners in the market said the inferno started in the market at about 2am, after a storm with claps of thunder ripped through the area and a nearby shop caught fire which spread to the entire market.

Giving further insight on the incident, the Chairman of Progressive Polythene Dealers Welfare Association, Mr. Vincent Elechi, said the traders had suffered terrible losses and regretted that the situation would have been salvaged if the state fire service had responded promptly.

“From our findings, it was the electric pole at the entrance of the market that caught fire when thunder struck. But immediately I got the information, I alerted the state fire service and they promised to come, but later said they needed to refill their water tank. By the time they arrived, everywhere was on fire because our products are highly inflammable.  We have more than 3,000 traders and small scale industrialists here but all our years of toiling have been reduced to ashes.  Though we are still counting our losses, presently more than N500 million has gone down the drain,’’ he said.

Corroborating the chairman’s claims, the Vice Chairman of the market, Francis Ubakasi, said some people were rescued from the fire when they attempted suicide.

He stated that the market served the polythene needs of Nigerians and some African countries, while some of them borrowed money from the banks to finance the procurement of their machine tools.

The traders appealed to the state government to come to their aid to cushion the effect of their losses.

He said he is from Ondo State, studied Marketing at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, as a part-time student and graduated in 1997.
The fake medical doctor was said to have fraudulently obtained N500,000 from one Joy Umosekhaimhe of 2, Adesanya Close, Ifeko-Gbagada.
Akintolure, who said he uses the wife’s car as a mobile clinic, said the money in question was borrowed from Umosekhaimhe, adding “actually, it was not N500,000. It was N260,000 she lent me to use for my brother’s ailment.”
According to Akintolure, “I have not treated more than 10 people. I just treat them for malaria and typhoid and I also give injections too because of my experience at Rivic Hospital at Akure.”

When asked how he got the identity card, he said he got it from a business centre and that the computer operator signed it for him.

He said that he charges between N3,000 and N4,000 per patient, adding that his wife was not aware of his trade.

Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ngozi Braide, said she received a petition at the area H Police Command Headquarters, Ogudu, on July 19, that one Adeyemi Stephen Akintolure obtained N500,000 from one Joy Umosekhaimhe.

Braide said that a letter was written to LUTH on July 23 to authenticate Akintolure claims of being a staff.
She said: “On October 10, LUTH replied that the suspect is not an employee of the hospital and was not issued the identity card.

“In view of the revelation, the suspect confessed that he is not a medical doctor, but has been practising for about four years, using his wife’s vehicle as a mobile clinic.”

She said his house and vehicle were searched and drugs, injections, syringes and laboratory coat were recovered.
